A Simple Change That Delivered Real Independence

At one of our homes, a recent change has made a meaningful difference to the people we support — the installation of new front door locks, giving tenants their own front door keys for the first time.

This update was achieved through collaboration between Salis Care and the landlord, ensuring that an essential element of independent living was finally put in place. While it may seem like a small adjustment, it has had a significant impact on daily life.

For the first time, tenants now hold their own keys to their home.

A long-overdue step toward independence

Having a personal key is a fundamental part of independent living. It should be a standard feature in any supported living environment, yet at Southcote this had not been in place until now.

By addressing this, we have removed an unnecessary barrier and ensured that people living at the service are able to access their home in a way that reflects dignity, trust, and autonomy.

The impact on daily life

This change has already strengthened independence in practical and meaningful ways:

Greater autonomy
Tenants can now come and go from their home without relying on staff for access, giving them more control over their daily routines.

Increased confidence
Holding responsibility for their own key supports individuals in building confidence and self-reliance in everyday life skills.

A sense of ownership
Having a key reinforces that this is their home — a personal space where they have privacy, choice, and control.

Progress toward independent living goals
This step aligns directly with person-centred support plans focused on increasing independence and community integration.

A positive outcome through partnership

This improvement was made possible through collaborative working between Salis Care and the landlord, with a shared focus on improving outcomes for the people living at Southcote.

It reflects a commitment to reviewing everyday systems and asking a simple but important question: does this support independence in the best way possible?

In this case, the answer led to clear action and a meaningful improvement for tenants.

Small change, real impact

At Salis Care, we recognise that independence is built through consistent, practical steps. The introduction of personal front door keys at Southcote is a strong example of how removing small barriers can lead to real progress in people’s lives.

Sometimes, the most important changes are also the simplest, and this one has made a lasting difference.
